Blog 1737: Prevention better than cure

The biggest injuries in swimming are shoulder injuries. All the exercises we do in land training help prevent these. Here's an interesting article on shoulder injuries and how to help prevent them to back up what we do.

http://watersportnews.com/news/story/203925/shoulder-maintenance-important-to-swimmers-at-all-levels/full_story.html

Speaking of prevention, here's my annual early warning about the winter blues. When the nights draw in and the temperature drops its important to stay focused and positive, less sun means less vit D so supplement, increase vit C and Omega 3 intake to help the immune system and make sure you wrap up after training especially in Long Eaton SC hoodies available from Graham (see the side of this blog)

Blog 1726: Bloodflow and session times

The times for the sessions on the programme are when the pool session starts. Swimmers should be turning up around 15 minutes early to be changed and ready to start at that time. When a swimmer turns up and is changed then they may assist in setting the pool up if needed, parents are also welcome to help out so the session can start on time. Swimmers should be doing bloodflow prior to every session and stretching afterwards. Bloodflow will take between 10 and 15 minutes and stretching is a minimum of 12 minutes to do it right.

Basic Bloodflow includes arm swings, full single arm circles forwards and backwards, double forwards and back, alternating forwards and back and monkey swings. Leg swings forward and back and side to side, jogging on the spot, squats and squat jumps can also be included once proper form on squats is established.

Basic Dynamic stretching (Pre Training) includes roll overs to reach, groiners, mountain climbers, shoulder dislocations and band work, squat complex. Those that have attended land training will know these exercises.

Static Stretching (post Training) Tricep, Shoulder, 45 degree pec stretch, lat stretch, hip flexor, glute, hamstring, quad, calf and streamline all stretches should be held for 30-40 seconds on each limb.

PNF stretching can be done only when the coach says so and when swimmers are able to do this corectly.

Pressure work, tennis balls, foam rollers and band work can be done both prior and after training.

Mobility work should be done daily at home and if flexibilty is to be improved find time to do your stretches as well after your dynamic and bloodflow warm up.

Blog 1718: DX Assistant Role

As some of you will have heard along the grapevine, I started as the new Assistant Head Coach for Derventio Excel this Monday. This role has replaced the teaching job I did and will not interfere with my position as Head Coach to Long Eaton Swimming Club.

This role will aid the club as we develop stronger pathways within Derbyshire's Elite programme feeding into Derventio Excel. It will also develop me as a coach as I will not only be working alongside Andi Manley, but also the British Swimming team at Loughborough, and the new ideas and skills I learn I will bring back to the club and pass on to our excellent coaching team. As we already do many of the same high level galas as DX, the poolside structure at these galas won't change with me and Andi sharing the work load and helping each other as we already do.

Blog 1716: Adult Swimprove

To all you parents who sit on the side and think "I could do that"........now is your chance.

As a result of receiving a grant from the "Return to Sport" Fund, the club is looking to expand the Adult Swimprove session, alongside the Masters session at 7 - 8pm on Fridays at Ilkeston. Coaching and technique advice will be available for those who want it.

The initial 12-week block will start in September for the bargain price of £36, payable at your first session. This will include your ASA registration, so those of you who are already parent members will get a refund at the end of the period.

For more information (although this blog pretty much covers it) please contact me, otherwise we will see you on Friday!
