Blog 1908: Club Towels

Following interest from members, we have identified a supplier for a new club towel.

These will be bath towel size, black with an orange club logo and the swimmer's name.

They will be available at £15 each and we require a minimum order of 50.

If you want to order one, please email Duane Rae-McLean or add your name to the order list on the notice board at West Park (but not both!).

We would like to send the first order off at the end of March, subject to sufficient numbers.

Blog 1907: Trent College

We have been asked by Trent College to remind you all that it is a residential school, with student accommodation in close proximity to the pool. They would therefore appreciate it if we could vacate the site as soon as possible and as quietly as possible after the end of sessions.

Can I also remind you that we only hire the pool building and members should not be roaming around the rest of the campus.

Blog 1904: Helens at it again

Helen Gorman, a masters swimmer who trains with Youth and Senior had an amazing year last year, smashing 12 British and 1 European record, has started this season as she finished last, by beating the 100m Long Course British Record yesterday and narrowly missing out on the 200 IM by 0.02. She did tweet that she should of done the crossover turn. Helen is going for the 400IM British Record today.

Blog 1903: County Relays

So we end off Counties with a 3rd weekend of competition in the form of County Relays. Despite not winning a gold (missing out by less than second a couple of times) yesterday I came away with a massive sense of satisfaction and pride.

The satisfaction came from a few areas - swimmer development was one of them. The way we as a club develop swimmers through our pathway stood out last night as clubs that were strong in the early age groups faded away our teams got stronger and stronger, it is a well know fact in swimming that Olympic medals are generally not won at 15-17 (Missy, Katie and Ruita being the exceptions) and that swimmers who develop at the correct rates go on to have a longer more successful career. This is what we do at Long Eaton.

I also took satisfaction from the knowledge that people consider us a "big" club and when they say that the not only mean in terms of results but in swimmer numbers, little do they know we have one of the smallest memberships in the county (so for anyone wanting to join the Orange and Black attack we have room for you), but because of our set up and attention to detail we just continue to produce quality swimmers.

The final area of Satisfaction came from the professionalism of our swimmers, self management is vital to success in our sport which is why we are so strict on it and it showed yesterday in terms of behaviour, nutrition and recovery between events.

The pride came from the performances not just in times but skill levels from take overs, to underwater .to transistion, to turns, to finishes we were 2nd to none. I'd picked the teams based on the British Rankings in early Febuary and used those times totalled to work out the entry times instead of guessing. over 90% of the teams entered not only beat those times but smashed them by a number of seconds. This is a major step up for every swimmer involved yesterday all of which showed fighting spirit throughout the meet.

I pass on my congratulations to all involved yesterday and to everyone who has made this our most succesful County championships ever.

Blog 1902: Relays Queens Street, Derby

Warm up time for tomorrows Relays is 10.00am for 11.00am start, please make sure you are ready on poolside at least 15 minutes before warm up for blood flow.

Poolside shoes must be worn at all times when swimmers are to leave poolside.

Blog 1901: Miami

As you will of no doubt heard on the jungle drums, we plan to go further afield for next years swim camp. Having spoken to other clubs who have done this type of thing, it is another level and they had an amazing experience. If we can get the pool and gym sorted at Pinecrest as DX did we'll be looking at going to Miami for 10 days. I would like to take no more than 25 swimmers, this would mean taking 5 members of staff being 2 coaches, 1 strength coach and 2  level 2 team managers. As with any camp it will be open to all Long Eaton swimmers over the age of 12 on the date of the camp (around 15th Feb depending on finding out if counties has moved again or not). Places will be distributed as follows, each swimmer will be scored by their coach and myself on Attendance, Attitude, Training Performance, Competition Performance, Land Based work including pre and post pool and Lifestyle, the highest scorers will get the first places. In a case of swimmers getting equal scores with places remaining, then those swimmers who have supported the overseas camp from the beginning will be selected first and the rest of the places will be subject to a random draw until the spaces are full. In other words you are going to have to earn your place on this camp as it will be special.

Once Swimmers are selected then all swimmers and parents will be involved in organising the camp through sub committees. The sub committees will work together to sort out, risk assessments, car/mini bus hire, hotel locations and booking, flight bookings, pool bookings, kit ordering, sorting transport to and from airports, social activities during camp and fund raising when done in a group these should not take longer than 5- 10 hours each. I will advise and guide on this. Any swimmer or parent not pulling their weight to help will get one warning and then their place will be given to someone of the reserve list should they continue to not pull their weight.

Blog 1888: An end to individual short course counties for 2014

Long Eaton finished the final weekend of individual counties with a flourish. Adding 39 golds to the previous weekends 21 to be 2 golds off last years total with relays to go. We have already surpassed last years medal haul of 102 in total by already taking 124 medals our highest ever total.

In the BAGCATS awards Long Eaton had top six finishes from
Harmony Torrington First 9 year girls
Katie Sloan First 12 year girls
Mimi Roberts 6th 12 year girls
Mathew Cross 2nd 13 year boys
Sian James 5th 13 year girls
Esther Halford 6th 13 year girls

Blog 1887: Greg and Alex raise the bar

Gregory Cox and Alex King joined Paralympic stars to compete in this weekends DSE National Junior and Youth championships. Competing in the S14 class both swimmers were on top form as Gregory claimed Gold in the 100 free and 100 IM Bronze in the 100 breast and 4th on the 50 fr, whilst Alex got Silver in the 50 free and Bronze on the 100 back all of these swims were personal best times.

Blog 1886: Berlin to British Championships

Following a near miss of qualifying for the 400m Freestyle at the DX February Festival Francesca Muir-Harris entered the International Swim Meet Berlin 2014. We left after training on Wednesday 26th March for Stanstead Airport where we stayed overnight before flying to Berlin Schonefeld Airport early Thursday morning. We arrived at our hotel where we left our bags whilst we went to find the pool. Luckily the pool was situated just 5 minutes away, the facilities were amazing, there was not just the 50m 10 lane competition pool but there was also another 10 lane 50m pool in the complex along with 2 teaching pools and a diving pit. In the afternoon Fran swam in the public session to loosen off after the journey and to acclimatize to the pool. After this we caught the tram into the center of East Berlin and had a wander round before heading back to the hotel for dinner and an early night before the race on Friday.

On Friday morning we again went over to the pool to register and to pay the entry fee, everything was very well organised and we were given start sheets and poolside passes, it was very exciting, in the competition pool all the flags of the competing nations were hanging from the ceiling which added to the atmosphere. When we returned in the afternoon for warm - up we couldn't believe how many swimmers there were, the pool was heaving, the warm up was mixed with no apparent restrictions on how many swimmers were allowed in each lane, it was even more dangerous when swimmers started diving in from the start end in regardless of lane, however all swimmers seemed to avoid injury ready for the start of racing!

The 400m Free was the first event and Fran was in Heat 4 Lane 7, the race itself was very exciting with Francesca slowly working her way through the field to win her heat by .02 sec, however more importantly she finished in 4.28.86 which means she will now be joining her fellow Long Eaton and DX Team Mates Hannah Jones and Kevin Wallbank in Glasgow for the British Championships in April. Report by Dominique.

A massive congratulations from all at LESC to the 3 British Championship (Commonwealth Games Trials) Qualifiers.
