Blog 2322: Miami 2016

There will be a meeting for all those that have their names down for the camp next year on Tuesday 30/6/2015 at West Park after Youth and Senior training. Those not in Youth and Senior may attend that session to make it easier.

All participants must help organize the camp and take part in any fund raising activities.

I have contact the pool and hotel, but other jobs that need doing include sorting Air Fares (Norwegian are still the cheapest), car hire. Each individual swimmer is responsible for their insurance (post office are good) ESTA's and Passport detail Collection, Measurements for team kit, medical forms, fund raising and the most important of all Team Managers. This camp will not go ahead without 2 Team Managers for the trip (if you want to split it so a week each that is fine). We must have one TM2 at all times. Deposits of £400 will need to be handed in as soon as possible as it is late and we need to get things booked ASAP to avoid price rise and exchange rate drops as the £ is fairly strong at the moment. The whole trip needs to be paid for prior to 10 weeks out.

Blog 2315: Nottingham Northern Gala

Dear Swimmers and Supporters

It is now just a week until the Nottingham Northern Junior Open 2015 takes place on Sunday 28th June at Beechdale - our last gala at this venue. The official programme has now been finalised and will be available to purchase at the event. Alternatively it can be downloaded from the swimming club website:

www.northernsc.co.uk/page32.htm

The same page contains other useful information, including an up to date entries list, and a draft timeline showing an estimated running order of events.

We have a catering van booked for the day, which will be providing hot and cold food and drinks from just outside the main entrance to the centre. An ice cream van is booked for the afternoon and Nottingham Northern swimmers and their families will be selling cakes during the day. A professional photographer will be in action during the day capturing images of swimmers competing and receiving trophies, with photos available to view, order and print on the day. There will also be a fully stocked swim shop present and a raffle with a host of exciting prizes.

Beechdale Swimming Centre has a large free car park located to the side and rear of the centre. If this fills up then there is free parking along Beechdale Road and the side roads leading off it, but please park with consideration for local residents. Please also be aware that roadwords are under way along Nottingham's Ring Road at Crown Island, to the south of Beechdale. This involves lane closures and could result in delays, so please allow a few extra minutes when planning your journey. Nottingham City Transport bus number 28 provides a regular service with a stop directly outside the swimming pool for those choosing to use public transport.

Please notify me before the start of each session if any swimmers have to pull out. This will help avoid having empty lanes during the races. Please advise any withdrawals by email to andrew@northernsc.co.uk, by text message to 07999 765 775, or in person to the desk on the day of the Gala by 8:30am for Session 1 or by 1:45pm for Session 2. Please also advise if a swimmer who has qualified for a final needs to pull out, as this will enable a place in the final to be given to a reserve finalist.

Warm-up times have now been finalised as follows:

Morning Session Warm-up Times: Girls: 8:30am - Age 9-11 followed by age 12-14. Boys: 8:55am: Age 9-11 followed by age 12-14. Start: 9:30am

Afternoon Session Warm-up Times: Boys: 1:45pm - Age 9-11 followed by age 12-14. Girls: 2.05pm: Age 9-11 followed by age 12-14. Start: 2:30pm

For those who aren't familiar with Beechdale, once inside the main doors to the building, swimmers and coaches proceed straight on towards the pool, where a desk will be available handing out pre-booked coaches passes and dealing with any arranged refunds. Spectators should instead head up the stairs towards the gallery.

Blog 2314: Unofficial Diddy report

As you all know the diddy league is Alex's baby and so I do not get involved and tread on his toes - apart from a little bit now, oh and last night even though "I wasn't there"!

After the Foo Fighters concert got cancelled and then my friends band had to withdraw from the Metal to the Masses semi final, I was left with a Saturday night free, a cherished and much loved event for a coach as it doesn't happen that often, so I decided to pop down to Queens leisure center and support the clubs Diddy team.

I'm glad I did as what I saw was terrific. I wont go on about results etc as that is for the official report, but race after race Long Eaton swimmers stuck out as the most skillful in the pool. I am a firm believer in skills and technique and putting this into young swimmer is vital. When swimmers master skills at an early age then when they grow up and become stronger and fitter those skills will help them win races. I am not worried if a swimmer does perfect skills but doesn't win at a young age, I would prefer the skills first then the victories later, after all the average Olympic medal winners age is 23 for females and 25 for males and I wouldn't be surprised to see those figures go up in years to come. That being said those swimmers that swam with high level skills were winning their races last night as well which is a tremendous achievement.

From what I saw last night the future of the club is bright, very bright with lots of skillful fast swimmers coming through the ranks. A big congratulations to Alex, Melissa and the junior squad coaching team for producing such a great pool of swimmers that are going to be amazing, and thank you to all the volunteers who help run these fun galas. The team spirit throughout the gala was amazing along with the nutrition, hydration and behavior of the swimmers, who left poolside spotless again.

Remember Behavior-Repetition-Habit, lets make those habits great!

Blog 2313: Time trial results

A tremendous effort this morning form all the swimmers who took part in the 800/1500 time trials. A lot of swimmers swimming this event for the first time realised that they can make this distance easily and a lot came out of the pool wishing they had pushed themselves that little bit more. It is a massive learning curve and knowing how to pace and swim with rhythm on these events is something that comes with time. So I suggest entering these events as much as possible. You can always come down in distance later in life but it is very hard to go up. A massive thank you to all the tickers and flickers that helped out, just ask Brian Goulton what life lesson he learnt this morning :).

Blog 2303: Goal Setting

Despite numerous talks and spending the whole year working off goal sheets and pace sheets it seems some people still need help setting goals. These goals are for the individual swimmer to set as they are their goals. The type of training we do is based around goals and the pace needed to hit those goals so it is a must for every swimmer to know what their goals are and what pace they need to be hitting. A simple sheet has been supplied and is on the website for swimmers to download and fill in where the formulas will work out the swimmers training pace for them. When setting goals work out the standard you are at (current PB's or the PB's of swimmer of similar standard to you - found on the British rankings system to left of this blog under bios) and the standard you want to achieve, be it in 3 months time, 6 months, a year or at the end of your career. To help with the steps needed the to do this the power point presentation is also on the website. Here is a guidance list per squad of where you should be looking in terms of performance when setting goals.

C Squad - County qualification
B Squad - County qualification - top ten at Counties, Regional qualification on 200 fr and 200 IM
A squad - top ten at Counties, Regional qualification on all 200's
Age Group Prestige - Regional qualification on all 200's, finals at Regionals
Youth and Senior any between County qualification and National qualification
Youth and Senior Prestige, Regional qualification to Finals at Nationals or British Championships qualification

All of these times can be found on the Derbyshire ASA website, themidlandchampionships.org and the british rankings system.

Blog 2301: 800/1500 time trials

As the club will be running its 800 and 1500 time trials at our long distance meet, swimmers will need qualifying times to enter. Therefore we will be running time trials for those without a time or who have an old time on Saturday 20th June and Saturday 27th June 8-9am. Warm up will be dry land before hand as we will need all the time and help we can get to get all the trials in. Time keepers and recorders please. There will be a sheet on the board at West Park for those wishing to partake so we can work out rough timings etc.
