Masters swimmers win ten medals in Sheffield
A relatively small Long Eaton squad attended the
British Masters Long Course Championships in Sheffield over the
weekend. With a few swimmers away on holidays, a team of five swimmers
won ten medals between them, six of which were gold.
Helen Gorman won gold in the 40-44 Age Group
50m, 100m & 200m breast stroke as well as the 200m IM. She won a
surprise silver medal and lifetime best time in the 100m freestyle, an
event she’s not swum long course since her teens. Her final
medal was bronze in the 50m freestyle.
Matt Leach won his first ever masters national
title in the 40-44 100m butterfly and then added the 100m freestyle gold
the following day. He also won bronze in the 50m butterfly.
The 4x50m medley relay team of Maggi Tuck, Helen
Gorman, Helen Akers and Mary Holland won silver in the 200yrs plus age
group (average age of 50 for each swimmer). The medal came thanks to a
storming freestyle leg by Mary Holland, the
most senior member of the team, who held off close competition from
much younger swimmers inside the final five metres.
The masters squad is focussed on swimming well
at the European Championships in London at the end of May. Long Eaton
will have nine swimmers taking part in the Europeans, swimming
individual and relay events in at the London Aquatics Centre.
