Blog 2813: Counties

What a great weekend for Long Eaton SC. I saw a massive improvement from the last 3 galas in terms of skill level, race awareness, mental toughness and discipline. The final one is key as without discipline you cannot possibly achieve any of the other aspects which make up great racing. What you do out the pool has direct reflections on what you achieve in the pool, so if you act like a champion you will become one, and we had many over the weekend. The pb count was through the roof which is what I look at most of all, after all you cannot control how others swim so no point comparing yourself to others or where you placed. We had more regional qualifiers taking our total over the 20 swimmer mark just from our home programme once again.

Keep up the improvements in all aspects and lets have a great weekend of racing once again.

Look out for relay teams and please if you have ticked off make sure you turn up otherwise you are letting your team mates down.

Blog 2812: What swimmers should be entering

The gala programme is at the side of this blog. It is updated on a regular basis and gives all levels of swimmers opportunity to compete. Please print it off and plan your events early so as not to be disappointed when trying to enter galas. Waiting for "faster" times at galas is not advised as we could miss the cut off date for entries.

Below is a general guideline as to what swimmers should be looking to enter at which galas.

Swimmers aged between 9 and 15 should be able to cope with a heavy programme at most galas therefore, these swimmers should be trying all the events as much as possible at the galas they qualify for. Dropping from 10-12 races a weekend to 8-10 on focus meets.

Swimmers 15-18 should still be fairly varied in their entries entering heavy programmes at the start of each cycle thinning down towards the focus meet. 8-10 races a weekend to 6-8 at focus meets.

Swimmers 18+ should always start the cycle off with a semi heavy to heavy programme and use shorter races to maintain interest in other strokes and events during the cycle but get more focused and have only 1-4 races at focus meets. 6-10 races a weekend to 1-4 at focus meets.

C squad should look out for time trials, novice meets and B grades and any low level 3 meets.
B squad should add any level 3 meets they qualify for and County Championships to the above.
A squad should be level 3 meets, County Championships and any level 2 or 1 meets they qualify for.
Youth and Senior should be level 3 meets, County Championships and any level 2 or 1 meets they qualify for along with any other championships they qualify for.
Prestige should be Level 3 to update times only, Level 2, Level 1, County Championships, Regional Championships and any National level meets they qualify for.

It is advised that swimmers enter galas outside the recommended levels (which are still on our gala programme) to keep times upto date where appropriate and after discussion with the coach.

All swimmers are expected to represent the club when called upon in any of the 3 leagues we compete in or when relays are entered at Championships. Selection details will appear on this blog.

All swimmers are expected to enter Club Championships unless directed not to do so by the coach, this will only ever apply to those swimmers going to nationals or major masters meets.

This gala is ideal for all of C squad and B squad between the ages of 9 and 14 age as of 26/6/2016. Swimmers are encouraged to enter as many races as they can.

This is a first come first gala, the closing date for this is Tuesday 1st March.

Blog 2804: Gala Programme and entries

Being away is always hard as issues do come up. However this is one that can normally be avoided. Swimmers are not to enter galas chasing times or that are not on the gala programme. The gala programme is constantly updated on here and our closing dates for entries are normally a week or more before the closing. If entries are in early then we can send them off and galas are not missed. So please look at the gala programme and enter as soon as you can. Always ask the coach if you don't know whether or not to enter a gala on the gala programme.

Going to a gala with no team mates, no coach and the added pressure of chasing a time usually ends up in poor performances.

Blog 2803: Thunderstruck

A massive thunderstorm in the morning on Tuesday meant another morning off and missing out on a breaststroke clinic from James Gibson, so we snuck into the short course pool in the afternoon to smash out a hard fastest possible pace set of 40 x 50 all on.

Blog 2802: Tilly time

A hard vO2 max set in the morning gave the swimmers an opportunity to go back to back hard sessions with everyone hitting target times and giving it their all. In the afternoon Tilly Hase from C Squad came down from Orland to join in and see what the fuss was about. She was immediately adopted by the swimmers who became very mumsy. Lucky for Tilly it was a recovery session with some work on dives; she still did 2500m long course though.

At night we went to see the Ice Hockey and what a great experience that was, which included overtime and a penalty shootout but no fights. A missed turning on the way home led to a nice tour of Miami's suburbs - stick to Commercial Drive!!!!

Blog 2801: Sunday 1/2 day

A lazy start to the day today with the morning off meaning we could go really hard Sunday afternoon. 5 x 100m tolerance saw people smashing Midland Times out of the water and not dropping off  at all. A great afternoon's swimming was followed by a meal for Valentines Day at TGI Fridays.

Blog 2800: Universal

Day Trip

Day off today on Saturday so we took the short drive up to Universal - only 206 miles. 3 hours 45 mins later, after an hour stop as we tried to figure out what fuel to put in, we got Universal Studios. After trying to figure out what park to go in, the whole group decided on the Hollywood side. Queues, queues and more queues but overall fun was had by all and at the end of the day everyone was buzzing and talking about how great the rides were. Another 3 hours home ended our nice little excursion and well earnt day of fun.

Blog 2793: Help Needed at County Championships

With days to go DASA are still very very under staffed with volunteers for ALL sessions at Matlock. So a plea to you all that we need volunteers for front desk, health and safety and competitor stewards otherwise I fear we will be unable to put on a safe and smooth running event which is a positive experience for the swimmers.

I am seeking people who need no qualifications, just a bit of 'can do' attitude and willingness to be part of the team.

Blog 2792: Miami Day 4 1/2 day Training

Targets and Tolerance

With just one session today it was time for some hard fast meters. The swimmers were given targets of hitting Regional times or quicker in rounds 5 times in the morning SCY. The stepped up big time Sam F knocking out a 61 on the 100 bk with Theo hitting 64's on all 5 of his 100 Bk's, Naomi Dipped under 1:10 on 100BK and Chloe B hit 61's on 100 Fr. to mention just a few. The whole team did step and everyone was either quicker than Regionals or recent times. Lana as the only camp swimmer to claim to be a breaststroker gets a lot of attention from the British swimmers and has talked James Gibson to do a breast clinic with us one day next week.

The afternoon saw a nice trip down the beach where the swimmers split into groups and had some nice chill time followed to our new favorite eating place the local Diner next to the hotel. A proper 1950's American Diner with great service and food. Not to mention Oreo Milkshakes.....aaaarrrggghhhh #nutrionfailagain!

Land training will start at 7-7.30am, then we will aim to start the swimming session at 7.45am with NO WATER BASED warm up, which is why its important to make the land session!

Volunteers will be needed to record times etc, so please make yourself available.

Blog 2789: Miami Training day 3, Brads Birthday

What a great day, the sun is shining the kids are on fire (not literally!) and we had all the fun of the fair with Brad. A stand up 50 to start the session for Brad with his Birthday ballon attached followed by 12 x 200 fastest possible pace for the morning session where Theo discovered his like for distance swimming. Following us the British swimmers came in and had a picture with Brad for his Birthday and following our warm down which the British team physio approved of and watched intently, we stayed behind to watch the GB team train and pick up some tips. Once again the coaches were very forthcoming at talking to our guys and explaining bits and bobs to them. Theo got to watch James Guys the current 200fr World champion train and chat to Joel his coach. Between reps James spoke to Theo and gave him one of the best pieces of advice ever, Joel asked him whats the most important thing in swimming to which James replied "you got to love it", which is so true. A quick trip back to the hotel for some down time and homework with lunch and then itwas back for a nice long course recovery session. Theos talk has worked as he was on fire in the pool smashing the session to pieces. The rest of the swimmers all looked so much more skill from just having watched the GB Team.

Brads Birthday treat was to race British Record holder Ben Proud over 50 yards Brad had his fins on against Ben and was supported by our swimmers and the GB team with Liam Tancock being very vocal for brad. In a close fought contest Ben finished in a time of 21.4 and Brad went 24.0. After the afternoon session we drove upto the Cheescake Factory for our evening meal of which most of us including myself were beaten by their portion sizes.

Blog 2788: Friday 12/19th February PM

Blog 2785: Miami Training day 2

Wooooooo suns out guns out!!! 24 degrees

Sorry just showing off a little there, it actually started off quite chilly at 17 degrees but the sun melted the clouds away and came to say hi, raising the temperature to 24 degrees.

A quality speed set in the morning (we have turned the training upside down as we have been moved around short course and long course) with lots of easy swimming in between and a nice very skillful aerobic loosen and recovery session in the afternoon.

Jon Rudd very kindly introduced Lana to Ruta. Ruta found Lana's reaction to meeting a current world record holder and Olympic champion very amusing. It has to be said that the British team have been excellent with our guys talking away and asking how their training is going etc, to the point where Liam Tancock asked Theo to show him what hes got on the sprint set after discussing Theos tweet of Liam the previous night. Look out for 3 tweets regarding our trip to the Ice hockey on Monday night. The teams are trying to get to meet the players and are each writing a tweet for this. The tweet with the most retweets will win bonus points for the team.

A trip to the beach for lunch after impressing Jon Rudd with the swimmers Yoga warm down then back to the pool for the afternoon. A few tired bodies a led to some upset tummies but after a good stretch and some kind words from the coach and everyone is ready to eat all they can pasta tonight ready for tomorrow mornings big set.

Its Bradleys 13th birthday tomorrow who knows whats in store.

Blog 2784: Miami Training Day 1

Great start to training on camp, a Nice body position, recovery and loosen session in the morning followed by a tasty kick set in the evening. training along side the British team and other National teams seems to have brought out the best in our swimmers with the ave 100 kick time on the set at around 1:25 long course with fins.

We followed the same pattern as last year food wise ith a nice trip to Outback Steak house in the evening after eating some "small monsters" in the afternoon.

Everyone has settled in well despite a few wobbles and team moral is high. Tracey and Russell have everything under control apart from my snoring but lets face it not even Superman could keep that under control.

The weather was a cool 18 degrees and cloudy today but the swimmers soon learnt that they can still get a tan from this.

I wont do some more out of the mouths of babes as Russell and Tracey are going to run a guess which swimmer said this competition when we get back, trust me there are some classics to come.

Blog 2781: Miami Journey Day

What an eventual journey that was, the main thing is we are all here safe and sound which is a massive improvement on last year. So from the train journey down with the police being called to the 45 minuets of rough (worse Ive ever had) turbulence it was an eventful day rounded off with the now customary Wendy's for tea before checking into the hotel. We did manage to get straight to the hotel this year as not having 4 back seat drives made a massive difference.

The hotel is really nice as you will see from the pictures below, the eating/lounge area is very impressive. Its only 7 minutes from the pool and we have already seen Ruta Meilutyte, Fran Hassal, Liam Tancock, Ben Proud and James Guy train. Whilst we have trained along side the Hungarian, Polish, Austrian and Canadian National teams. It seems to be a full international team camp week or two.

This morning we did a loosen with some work on body position and a nice med ball kick set, as the pool have changed our Short Course and Long Course sessions round along with having so many people using the gym I have had to completely redo the programme so this afternoon will be Wednesday mornings kick set.

The weather is a cool 16 degrees and overcast however it is ment to be warming up towards the weekend with highs of 24 degrees.

Some classic out of the mouths of babes for you.

Who was the president during the American Civil War? "George Clooney"
"Austria is in America isnt it?"
"this is harder than Labor" meaning laboring work

Its going to be a long camp!
